ROCKWOOL Hut
Nuratherm Warm Roof Hybrid System Render

Introduction

ROCKWOOL insulation is a non-combustible, stone wool board used in warm roof systems where fire safety and acoustic performance are essential priorities.

With a long history of use in New Zealand commercial and multi-unit buildings, ROCKWOOL provides both thermal resistance and high levels of sound absorption. It is especially suited to buildings with occupancy below or sensitive acoustic requirements, such as schools, apartments, and hospitals.

Installed above the vapour barrier and beneath the waterproof membrane, ROCKWOOL performs well under torch-on systems like Nuraply 3PM. It can also be used in conjunction with hybrid systems or in roofs where non-combustibility is a specification requirement.

While slightly heavier than PIR, it offers increased fire protection and resistance to deformation over time. ROCKWOOL is part of the Nuratherm range and supported with full system guidance to ensure it meets performance targets and building code compliance.

Considerations

  • Heavier than PIR: Its higher density adds significant dead load to the structure, requiring engineering confirmation — particularly on timber or lightweight decks.

  • Requires dual-layer installation for load distribution: To meet NZ warm roof performance and compressive strength requirements, ROCKWOOL typically needs a high-density coverboard upper layer combined with the ROCKWOOL base.

  • Slower install and weather sensitivity: ROCKWOOL boards are bulkier and more fragile to install than PIR rigid boards which should be considered when programming the job.

FAQs

What is ROCKWOOL insulation NZ used for in waterproofing or insulation?
ROCKWOOL insulation NZ is used in flat roof and wall systems for its excellent fire-resistant, acoustic, and thermal properties. It provides non-combustible insulation that enhances safety and reduces noise transfer, making it ideal for both residential and commercial environments where performance and sustainability are paramount.
Where is ROCKWOOL insulation NZ typically installed on a flat roof?
On flat roofs, ROCKWOOL insulation is installed above the vapour barrier and beneath the waterproofing membrane as part of a warm roof assembly. This placement helps maintain temperature continuity, improves fire safety, and effectively dampens noise, contributing to overall building performance. Since ROCKWOOL has modest compressive strength, a protection board is recommended above the ROCKWOOL
What are the technical benefits of using ROCKWOOL insulation NZ?
ROCKWOOL insulation offers high fire resistance, superior sound absorption, and excellent thermal insulation. Its dense, fibrous composition resists moisture without compromising breathability, making it a robust choice for achieving energy efficiency and enhanced comfort in modern building envelopes.
