Urban Development Roofing Solution
The Holiday Inn Express and Suites Queenstown, the first of its franchise to open in New Zealand, was designed to reflect the surrounding Wakatipu valley landscape. Inspired by the nearby mountain ranges and the glacier that once occupied the area, the building blends natural and man-made materials with bold architectural elements. The distinctive roof shapes and contemporary cladding create a standout addition to downtown Queenstown.
The Challenge
With multiple roof pitches and complex geometry, the project required a roofing system that could deliver both high performance and aesthetic appeal. Nuralite’s Nuraply 3PM double-layer and Nuraply TPO single-ply membranes were specified for the exposed roof sections.
To meet insulation, acoustic, and structural requirements, the Nuratherm Warm Roof system was installed. The CodeMark certified system allowed for a 1-degree roof fall — ideal for areas with height restrictions. Additionally, Nuraply 3PT and 3PG membranes in tanking applications ensured the building remains watertight and fully protected from water ingress.
The Solution
Nuralite delivered a high-performance urban development roofing solution, combining warm roof insulation, durable membrane waterproofing, and flexible tanking. This approach ensured long-term energy efficiency, durability, and acoustic performance while complementing the Holiday Inn’s innovative design.
The project has been widely recognised for its design excellence, being a finalist at the World Architecture Festival 2021 and winning the 2022 Southern Architecture Award for Planning + Urban Design — demonstrating how Nuralite roofing systems can support bold architectural visions.
