Situation
The Umbra Lux project in Wanaka is a contemporary residential home designed by Eliška Lewis Architects Ltd and constructed by Dunlop Builders. With its upper-level living spaces overlooking Lake Wanaka, the design required uninterrupted views and external decks while maintaining high thermal efficiency and durability.
Challenge
To preserve the stunning lake views, the roof needed the lowest possible profile without compromising insulation or performance. The design also had to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, minimising visual impact when viewed from above. Ensuring a clean, streamlined finish with no visible ventilation was critical to achieving the desired aesthetic.
Solution
The solution was the Nuralite 3PM Warm Roof System, installed on a low-pitched membrane roof with a slope of under three degrees. This design ensured the roof would not obstruct the lake views while delivering superior thermal insulation. The slate-colored membrane was chosen to integrate the structure into the natural landscape, reducing visibility from higher elevations.
The warm roof system provided a fully insulated, energy-efficient layer for the living areas below, eliminating the need for external vents and maintaining the sleek, flat roof profile. Nurajack timber decking pedestals were used for the external decks, providing a stable, durable surface while complementing the home's modern design. A steel barge detail at the edges created a clean, flush finish, while the membrane ensured lasting waterproofing.
The Umbra Lux home was completed in 2024, combining architectural elegance with high-performance roofing to meet both practical and aesthetic demands.
