Situation

Across New Zealand, many existing buildings face issues such as poor thermal performance, high energy consumption, and ageing roofs that no longer align with today’s expectations for comfort or sustainability. Life Church Mount Eden was one such building. It was an industrial structure repurposed into a community facility with a 1,750-seat auditorium that required a significant upgrade to support its new function.

Challenge

The key challenge was transforming an ageing building into a high-performing, energy-efficient space without demolition. The roof design included low-pitch and complex forms that made conventional insulation methods difficult to apply. The project also needed to meet tight timeframes and specific performance criteria.

Solution

Instead of demolishing the existing structure, the team retained it and focused on significantly improving the building envelope.

A Nuralite warm roof system was installed to upgrade the various roof levels. This system created a high-performing and durable roofing assembly that accommodated penetrations and services required for the church’s operations.

The result is an efficient building that avoided the carbon cost of new construction while delivering excellent thermal performance and comfort for its occupants.
